Stainless Steel 317 and 317L are molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels with increased corrosion resistance. Common composition is Chromium (18–20%), Nickel (11–15%), Molybdenum (3–4%), and low content of Carbon (≤0.08% in 317, ≤0.03% in 317L). This reduced carbon in 317L improves weldability and minimizes carbide precipitation. Mechanical properties are tensile strength of a minimum of 515 MPa, yield strength of a minimum of 205 MPa, and elongation of a minimum of 35%, which makes them applicable to high-stress usage with durability and resistance to crevice corrosion, pitting, and general chemical attack.
